San Miniato

Hotel Manzoni

San Miniato is a Tuscan town in the province of Pisa, known for its rich history, artistic heritage and high-quality gastronomic products, in particular the white truffle. It stands on a hill that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, and its historical centre is characterised by narrow, picturesque streets. The history of San Miniato dates back to Etruscan times, but it was in the Middle Ages that it began to develop as an important commercial and cultural centre. The name ‘San Miniato’ derives from the Christian martyr Miniato, who, according to legend, was beheaded in the area and whose head was miraculously found in Florence. The town also became famous for its castle and walls, which defended the inhabitants from outside attacks.

The historical centre of San Miniato is dominated by the Cathedral of San Miniato, an imposing example of Romanesque architecture. Other places of interest include:
Tower of Frederick II: one of the medieval towers that stands in the centre of the city, from which one can enjoy spectacular views. Church of San Domenico: an important religious building with frescoes and significant works of art. San Miniato Diocesan Museum: housing works of art and historical artefacts.

San Miniato is famous for its world-famous white truffle. Every November, the Truffle Fair is held, an event that attracts visitors from all over, offering a wide range of typical products and truffle dishes.
